This site is considered the start of all social networking, and had acquired 3 million users within its first few months. However, with the rise of other social networking sites, Friendster shut down indefinitely in June of 2015.

  • MySpace

    MySpace was a social networking site that allowed users to create personal profiles and share blog posts,pictures, videos, and musical interests. From 2005 to 2008, MySpace was the most popular social network on the internet. In 2008, MySpace's popularity declined when Facebook was launched.
  • Facebook

    Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerburg, and his four college roommates. Originally, the website was limited to students attending Harvard, but in 2006 anyone above age 13 was granted access to the site. Facebook lets users create a profile on which they share pictures, status updates, and videos with their friends. Facebook quickly gained popularity, and exceeded one billion active users in October of 2012.
  • YouTube

    YouTube is a video sharing website that allows users to post, rate, share, comment, and watch videos all over the world. The site was founded in 2005, and after gaining popularity at a very fast rate was purchased by Google and still remains popular today.
  • Twitter

    Twitter is a social networking site that lets users send out and read short, 140 character messages known as "tweets". This site has over 500 million users as of 2015, and still remains one of the most visited sites on the internet.
  • Tumblr

    Tumblr is site created for posting various multimedia in the form of a personalized blog. Tumblr has 555 monthly visitors, and in 2013, the website was purchased by Yahoo and continues to grow in popularity.
  • Instagram

    Instagram is a social networking application that enables its users to post pictures and videos as well as comment and "like" other users posts. The app gained 100 million users in its first two years, and still remains popular.
  • Snapchat

    Snapchat is a smartphone application on which users can send picture messages that are only accessible for a few seconds before disappearing. Snapchat now allows users to send texts, videos, and even post pictures viewable by everyone they are friends with. As of 2016, the application hit 7 billion daily videos sent.
