Under the ruling of Cortés, Ulloa travels up the west coast of what is today Mexico. The Spanish called this part of spain, the "Californias". Ulloa believed CA was an island (Baja California).

He was told by the viceroy of New Spain to explore the coast of California and go farther North than Cortés had gone. In September, he lands on a by and called it San Miguel. That place is now called San Diego.

Before Cabrillo died, the chief pilot Ferrelo took charge of Cabrillo's expedition in search of the Strait of Anion. He left Channel Islands, CA (Central area) and went up North to Oregan. All this area was called Alta California.

Similar to Spain, the Queen of Engliand sent Drake to search a sea route from Europe to Asia. He was also told to attach Spanish ships and take their treasures away.

Spain sent Cermeño to take care of the gold and silver coings by having them travel through a large ship called a galleon. He lands in a bay, and calls it the Bay of San Francisco. He was at the exact same bay Drake was in 16 years earlier.

New Spain's viceroy made Vizcaíno search for a safe port (Monterray Bay), where galleons could safely load and unload goods. He was also told to name all of the places where he anchored after Catholic saints.
