Theme: I don't think that Anne thought much of this diary when she saw it on her table as a birthday gift, but in the future, her diary would become famous and provide insight to the mind of a teenager during the time of the Holocaust. -
Anne moves into the Secret Annex.
Summary: Anne and her family leave their home and move into the Secret Annex to avoid being taken away.
Turning Point: This event is a turning point because it directly impacted Anne's future.
Theme: In her diary, Anne did not make a big deal of moving into the Annex, but her moving into the Annex changed her future greatly. -
The van Daans move in to the Annex with Anne and her family.
Summary: The van Daans move into the Annex. Mr. van Daan is a business partner and good friend of Mr. Frank's.
Turning Point: If the van Daans had not moved into the Annex, Anne would not have had a relationship with Peter and many of her stories in her diary would have turned out differently.
Theme: This event relates to the theme because although it seems small, it’s a huge turning point for the story and helps Anne’s character develop. -
Dussel moves into the Annex.
Summary: Albert Dussel is taken into the Annex.
Character Development (Negative): Anne shares a room with Dussel and they dislike one another. Anne is annoyed with Dussel because he is loud when he wakes up and Dussel is annoyed with Anne because she screams during her nightmares and moves around a lot while she sleeps.
Theme: This event relates to the theme because although this doesn’t seem like an important event, it definitely impacts Anne’s experience in the Annex. -
Anne begins to hear the effects of the war.
Summary: Anne starts to "hear" the war (the shooting guns, the falling bombs).
Character Development (Negative): Hearing the effects of the war shows a negative impact on Anne because she is afraid of the war and starts to wish she could run far away from the Annex.
Theme: This event relates to the theme because Anne hearing the effects of the war didn’t occur on one single day. It happened and increased slowly. This shows how even the smallest events can have a large impact. -

Anne begins to realize her feelings for Peter.
Summary: Anne finds friendship in Peter and starts to have feelings for him.
Character Development (Positive): This event is a positive character development because it shows how Anne is maturing and growing into a woman. She used to find Peter intolerable. Her starting to look at his positive qualities shows her development.
Theme: This event would be normal in a teenager’s life in the present, but this event has a large impact on Anne because she begins to mature and grow as a person. -
Anne writes her last diary entry.
Summary: Her last entry talks about how she wishes she could show her "deeper", nicer, and quieter side.
Character Development (Negative): She'd prefer to be serious and quiet now, but believes that if she tried to do that, people would make fun of her. She's become tired of being happy and cheerful for others.
Theme: This event relates to the theme because although Anne did not realize how impactful her entry was, it truly shows how she’s developed since she moved into the Annex.
