This controversial act forced any federal official who didn't arrest a runaway slave to pay a fine which caused tensions between the North and the South. The North wanted to help slaves find freedom while the South didn't. Eventually, the Fugitive Act event led to the Civil War.

    The Lincoln- Douglas Debates
    The first debate between US Senate candidates in the American history. In the debate, Lincoln did not call for the immediate abolition of slavery or for political equality for African Americans while Douglas promoted popular sovereignty as the solution to regional tensions. At the end, Douglas won the Senate race, but the debate brought Lincoln national attention.

    Lincoln won the election handily but did not receive a single southern electoral vote. Southerners were outraged at Lincoln's elections. Southerners feared that his election would lead to its demise, and vowed to leave the Union if he was elected.

    South Carolinians were suspicious of Lincoln's motives and ordered the Fort Sumter garrison to surrender to the Confederacy. President Lincoln called for 75000 volunteers to fight against the Confederacy. The South raised troops quickly and struggled to equip and train them before sending them into battle. The Civil War had officially begun.
