    *Solved the problem of Slavery in the West
    *With the exception of Missouri, a line was drawn at 36'30' and every state that was excepted into the U.S beneath that line was a Slave state and every state excepted into the U.S above that line was a Free state

    The Nullification Crisis
    *Southern states were angry about the tariffs the goverment had passed
    *John C Calhoun thought that it was fair to allow states the right to nullify an unfair law
    *South Carolina threatened to seceed because they goverment refused their argument
    *Henry Clay came up with the compromise to lower the tariffs
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    *Henry Clay passed this law to allow the compromise of 1850 to pass
    *Any African American's that had escaped to the North were permitted by the goverment to be captured and sent back to the South
    *These laws incresed the tension between the North and South
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    *Henry Clay created the compromise of 1850
    *Congress was debating over the territories admitted into the country after the Mexican-American War
    *The compromise stated that California would be a free state and that the territory of New Mexico had no restrictions on Slavery
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    *5000 Proslavery and Anti-Slavery supporters all moved to Kansas after the Nebraska-Kansas Act was passed to decide whether or not the state would be free or slave
    *Violence broke out between the parties and incresed the tension between North and South
    * Also during this time is was when John Brown and his supporters murdered several Proslavery supporters in support of Abolition
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    *Dred Scott sued the supreme court to gain his freedom
    *Scott lost the court case because 7 out of 9 of the supreme court justices ruled that he was a slave and was not a U.S citiizen, which also meant that he could not sue the supreme court
    *The Court case incresed the political tensions between northern and southern politicians
  • The Attack on Harpers Ferry

    The Attack on Harpers Ferry
    *John Brown lead the raid
    *Brown wanted slaves to be able to fight for there freedom, so he and his men attacked the army base of Harpers Ferry to arm the slaves
    *John Brown and his men were captured and 10 were killed
    *This inspired Abolitionists to fight for anti-slavery with force
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    *Abraham Lincoln wins the election of 1860 and becomes the President of the United States
    *After Lincoln becomes president; the southern states start to seceed from the U.S
