  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Leaders (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison) thought that slavery would just disappear, but it didn't because the government had no control over it. Missouri wanted to allow slavery. The comprise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. This helped balence things out.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner believed God chose him to amend the sins of slavery. He quietly enlisted slaves to his cause to help with his uprising. Turner and his men (55 slaves) launched one of the biggest slave rebellion in history. They moved from home to home killing every white person they met. The rebellion lasted for 36 hours. The entire slave population revolted. 60 white men and children had been killed in southern Virginia. They were caught tried and executed.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Things are complicated because it was the aftermath of the Mexican War. The compromise prevented further territorial expansion of slavery while strengthening the fugitive slave act.
  • Fugitive Slave Acts

    The Fugitive Slave Act forced states to deliver the runaway slaves when they are requested by their slaveholders. Biased and in favor of Southern slaveholders.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    The book shows you the harsh life of a slave. He helped in the underground railroad. It had a big effect on the people. Everyone's eyes had been opened to the horrors of slavery. This book also widened the division between the north and south
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Popularized by newspapers. Referred to the violence that occurred the Kansas territory. The conflict that emerged from the passage from Kansas to Nebraska. The Kansas/Nebraska Act allowed settlers in the two territories to determine whether or not to permit slavery by popular vote. The violence because of this act shocked and troubled the nation.
  • Abraham Lincoln Elected President

    Abraham Lincon is elected 16th president and first Republican to win the presidency. He faced a serious slavery issue known as the Lincon-Douglas Debate. Lincon did not want slavery at all and Douglas wanted the states to be able to make that decision. Because Lincoln became president, 7 states seceded and the confederate states of America had been formally established and Jefferson Davis was their president. Civil War began 1 month later.
  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    The battle took place in Charleston, South Carolina. On April 12, a bombardment had begun. The Southerners were afraid when Lincoln was elected president and that was what caused this battle. Lincoln sent fresh supplise to the fort, the south saw it as aggressiveness and they started shooting. They were both firing at each other for 34 hours but nobody was killed.
