    The north and the south have very different opinions about the growth of slavery.Thus, the Missouri compromise was then drafted. The Missouri compromise was a series of laws that helped maintain the balance between the slave and free states. Henry clay settled yet another dispute and said that main would be admitted as a free state and arkansas would be admitted as a slave state.

    Southern states claimed that tariffs were unfair and only benefited the north.John C. Calhoun hinted that any state can nullify a federal law if its unconstitutional.South Carolina then threatened to secede when the federal government denied it. Henry clay Came up with a compromise that lowered the tariffs which both sides agreed to.

    Congress had many arguments over the decision whether or not to take the new land and admit it as slave states or free states. Fortunately, Henry clay wrote up a compromise to settle things between the north and the south. It stated that California would be admitted as a free state, Washington D.D. would no longer allow slave trade, & congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of territories that came from mexico.

    in 1850, the fugitive slave law was passed by the congress. It allowed people to capture African-Americans who had escaped to the north.This act persuaded many abolitionists that slavery is getting too-out-of hand and they would have to go out of their comfort zone to put a stop to it.This led to John Brown's Raid and the American Civil War.

    Kansas had 5000 people from nearby pro slavery Missouri come and illegally vote for Kansas to be a slave state. as a result, Kansas then had a pro slavery government. The antislavery government was then attacked by the pro slavery government.

    African Americans were not considered citizens when the ocnsititution was drafted in 1787, But Dred Scott didnt agree. Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. He lived in a free territiory, but congress stated that he was property of an owner and property can not be taken away without due process of law.

    john brown had been trying to motivate and persuade the slaves to fight back, so he had plans to capture the arsenal at the army base in harpers ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves.since not many had joined his little rally, he and his men were captured and ten were killed. This has raised tensions about slavery in america.

    In 1860, an election was held to choose a new president for the united states of america. Abraham Lincoln states that he will not affect slavery in the south, but the south dosnt believe him. After he wins, Southern states begin to secede from the union.
