    MLK Jr. was a very important leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a baptist minister who grew up in Atlanta and made many advancements in Civil Rights.

    Brown V. Board of Education
    On this date, the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional to have segregation in public schools. This ruling overturned the "seperate but equal" rule put in place by Plessy V. Ferguson.
  • Rosa Parks sparks Bus Boycotts in Montgomery, AL

    Rosa Parks sparks Bus Boycotts in Montgomery, AL
    Rosa Parks, a member of the NAACP refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus and was in turn aressted. Her actions inspired major bus boycotts in Montgomery. The Montgomery bus system was desegregated more than a year later on December 21, 1956.

    Martin Luther King Jr., Charles K. Steele, and Fred L. Shuttlesworth established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference which became a major force in the Civil Rights Movement. With MLK Jr. as their president, the nonviolent group helped in many protests and further progressed the movement.

    After laws were passed that prohibited segregation on interstate travel facilities, student volunteers tested these laws by going on long rides throughout the South. The freedom riders were supported by the SNCC and the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE).

    Martin Luther King Jr. attempted to desegregate the entire community of Albany from 1961-1962. The protests that took place resulted in the arrests of over 1,000 African Americans. MLK Jr. left Albany believing the movement to be a failure. However, he learned many lessons that he used soon after during the Birmingham Movement.

    During his Birmingham Movement, MLK Jr. was jailed. The Birmingham Movement was a pivotal point in the Civil Rights Movement because of how televised the events that took place there were. The world sympathized with these protestors after witnessing the brutality of firehoses and police dogs being used on them.

    200,000 joined MLK Jr. in his march on Washington. This is where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

    President Johnson signs Civil Rights Act of 1964
    On this date, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights act of 1964. This act prohibited discrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion, or national origin. The law also provided the federal government with powers to enforce desegregation.
