    Reies Lopez Tijerina and the land grant movement in New Mexico in 1956 to 1967. Tijerina's movement began as a land grant movement and grew to encompassed Civil Rights, Discrimination among other social issues that Chicanos faced.

    Cesar Chavez
    Cesar Chavez forms the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA). Largely formed of Latino farm workers.
  • The Five-year Delano Grape Strike Begins

    The NFWA joins the Filipino Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee AWOC in the strike against grape growers. Their joint efforts gave great results for improving farm workers working conditions as well as wages.
  • Teatro Campesino is Created

    Teatro Campesino
    Created on the Delano grape strike lines the company performed short skits on flatbed trucks to give life to the plight and the cause of the farm workers.
  • The United Farm Workers Union (UFW) is born

    The United Farm Workers Union (UFW) is born
    After the march from Delano to Sacramento the NFWA and AWOC agree to join to create the United Farm Workers Union.

  • Cesar Chavezs' first Hunger Strike

    Chavez goes on a hunger strike to redirect the Unions efforts toward non-violence. Due to his commitment to non-violence the farm workers movement gains national attention.

    Ramon "Chunky" Sanchez
    "Chunky" recieves NEA Honors
    Son of immigrant farm workers, he grew up working in the fields. He bacame involved in the Chicano movement playing social concious music. Attended SDSU and continues his work in San Diego working with youth and the community.

    Chicano activist led anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and activities.
  • The end of Tijerina's Land Grant Movement

    The end of Tijerina's Land Grant Movement
    In early 1970 Tijerina was sentenced to two years in Federal prison for the 1967 Tierra Amarilla Courthouse Raid. His leadership began to decline in the Land Grant Movement due to a two factors: 1. a condition to his release from prison was that he was not to hold any leadership role in the Alianza and 2. while in prison his ideas became more radical and alienating many of his followers.

    A march through East Los Angeles that drew from 20,000 to 30,000 participants.
