The Brief History of Computers

  • Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)

    Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)
In 1937, Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry built the first electronic digital computer that was called Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC).
  • Period: to

    First Generation

Computers of this generation could only perform single task, and they had no operating system.
  • Colossus

    Colossus
In 1943, a computer by the name of Colossus was built for the military.
  • Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC)

Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC)
Other developments continued until 1946, when the first general purpose computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), was built; it was said that this computer weighed 30 tons and had 18,000 vacuum tubes, which was used for processing, and when it was turned on for the first time, the lights in certain sections of Philadelphia dimmed.
  • Period: to

    Second Generation

This generation of computers used transistors instead of vacuum tubes which were more reliable. During this generation of computers over 100 computer programming languages were developed, computers had memory and operating systems. Storage media such as tape and disk were in use also were printers for output.
  • Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1)

    Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1)
In 1951, the Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1) was the first commercial-use computer released to the public.
  • International Business Machine (IBM)

    International Business Machine (IBM)
In 1953, the International Business Machine (IBM) 650 and 700 series computers made a lasting impression in the world.
  • Period: to

    Third Generation

The invention of integrated circuit brought us the third generation of computers.
  • Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-Dos)

    Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-Dos)
In 1980, Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-Dos) was born.
  • IBM Personal Computer (PC)

    IBM Personal Computer (PC)
In 1981, IBM introduced the personal computer (PC) for home and office use.
  • Windows Operating System

    Windows Operating System
In the 1990’s, the Windows Operating System developed.
