After walking along the fence for awhile, Bruno meets Shmuel who is wearing striped pajamas and has bare feet. They begin talking and find out they have the same birthday, April 15, 1934.

Anne Frank and family are arrested by the Gestapo in Amsterdam, then sent to Auschwitz. Anne and her sister Margot are later sent to Bergen-Belsen where Anne dies of typhus on March 15, 1945.

As Bruno and Shmuel begin to talk and meet up more, Bruno learns that Shmuel is from Poland. Things began going poorly with his family when his mother made armbands for the family with stars on them.

Bruno's grandmother in Berlin dies and they return to Berlin. He finds that he does not miss it as much as he once did.

One day, while hanging out with Shmuel, he tells Bruno that his father has gone missing. Bruno offers to help Shmuel find his father and gets the idea to have Shmuel get him some striped pajamas so Bruno can come across the fend and help.

As Shmuel and Bruno search for Shmuel's father, the guards begin to herd the prisoners to the gas chambers. It is here that Shmuel and Bruno meet their death, holding hands.

One day Bruno meets Shmuel at the fence and Shmuel has a pair of striped pajamas for Bruno. Bruno puts on the pajamas and sneaks across the fence.

After Bruno is discovered missing, a search begins to find him. His father finds his clothes and a gap in the fence where a small boy could have gone through.
