    Croatia first appeared as a duchy in the late 8th century and then as a kingdom in the 10th century. From the 12th century it remained a distinct state but it obeyed the kings and emperors of various neighboring powers, primarily Hungary and Austria. Austro-Hungary took them over completely in 1867.

    A section of Serbia (Bosnia) was taken over by Austria-Hungary. The serbs in Bosnia were angered by this and created a terrorist group called The Black Hand. They killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, and his wife. This angered Austria-Hungary, and they sent an ultimatum to Serbia saying that Serbia better arrest all members of the Black Hand,
