Genocide- Armenian Genocide Begins
The Armenian Genocide was an occurrence in which the government of the Ottoman Empire (now the Republic of Turkey) exterminated approximately 1.5 million Armenians. This obviously represents genocide on the hate pyramid because this was an attempt to systematically annihilate the entire Armenian people. -
Bias- Formation of the Nazi Party
The Nazi Party was founded in 1920, and emphasized national pride and anti-semitism. This demonstrates bias on the hate pyramid because not only did the party stereotype Jews as the causes of Germany’s problems but by founding the party, anti-Jew bias was justified by bringing together like-minded people. -
Discrimination- Rosa Parks is Arrested
In Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks was arrested because she did not give up her seat to a white person on a city bus. Her arrest represents discrimination on the hate pyramid because it was based on the idea of segregation, which falls under this level of the pyramid. -
Bias Motivated Violence- Harvey Milk is Assassinated
Harvey Milk was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the first openly gay elected official in the state of California. In November of 1978, he was assassinated by Dan White, who was also a member of the board of supervisors. This event can be classified as individual bias-motivated violence because murder is included in this level of the hate pyramid. -
Individual Acts of Prejudice- Trump's Pocahontas Comment
Recently, President Trump used the name "Pocahontas" to belittle Senator Elizabeth Warren, who claims to be of Native American heritage. This situation references individual acts of prejudice on the hate pyramid since in this case, Trump is technically name-calling and ridiculing an individual.
