    The Beatles were the most iconic band of the 1960’s, and they sadly broke up in 1970. The cause of their breakup was not a single event but many events. There were differences between the artistic visions of each band member. George Harrison and Ringo Star temporarily left the group a few times.     Disney World opened on October 1, 1971 and is the world’s most visited amusement park. In is in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and cover 30, 080 acres of land. There are many different types of parks within the resort, such as four theme parks, water parks, 23 Disney themed hotels, and a campground. It’s by far the best place on Earth.

    D.B Cooper
    D.B Cooper is a name that is used to refer to an unidentified man who hijacked an aircraft in the airspace between Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington on November 24, 1971. This man extorted 200 thousand dollars in ransom and parachuted to an unknown fate. Despite an ongoing FBI investigation, the perpetrator has never been located or positively identified. The case is the only unsolved air piracy in American history.

    George Wallace shot while campaigning
    George Wallace was Alabama’s 45th governor of Alabama and was an American politician. On May 15, Wallace was shot 5 times by Arthur Bremer while campaigning in Laurel, Maryland. This left him paralyzed from the waist down and bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

    Paul Getty Kidnapped (Part 2)
    Paul’s family thought this note was a joke and a way to get some money from his wealthy grandfather. Then, he was taken to a mountain hideout and blindfolded. Later, another note was received with Paul’s ear and a lock of hair and another demand for money, this time 3.2 million dollars. Paul’s dad asked his dad for the money, but he refused to give it to him. Finally, Paul’s grandfather paid the money and Paul was found in Italy on December 15, 1973, with only one ear.

    Paul spent most of his childhood living with his dad in Rome. When Paul was expelled from school in early 1971, his father moved back to England and on July 10, 1973 in the Piazza Farnese, Paul was kidnapped. A note from an unknown author was received, asking for 17 million dollars in order for Paul to arrive back safely. and a way to get some money from his wealthy grandfather.

    Patty Hearst Kidnapped (Date Unknown) (Part One)
    Patty is the granddaughter of William Randolph and great-granddaughter of George Hearst. She gained her fame in 1974 and she was kidnapped shortly after by the Symbionese Liberation Army. She took her kidnappers side’s to help their cause, which is often called Stockholm syndrome, which is where hostages are nice to their captors. Patty later helped the SLA with a bank robbery and was imprisoned for 2 years when her sentence was commuted by Jimmy Carter.

    Jimmy Hoffa was an American labor union leader and he served as the General President thirteen years. His presidency ended because of his imprisonment in 1967 for jury tampering and bribery. After his release, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared on July 30, 1975. According to bystanders he was supposed to meet two Mafia leaders in the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox Restaurant in Bloomfield Township in Detroit. He disappeared around 2:45 on this day.

    September 5, 1975 was Ford’s first attempted assassination. It happened on the grounds of the California State Capitol when a follower of Charles Manson, named Lynette Fromme, drew a gun on Ford. She was restrained by the Secret Service and sentence to a life in prison.

    Ford’s second attempted assassination happened not long after on September 22, 1975 in San Francisco, California. A lady named Sarah Jane Moore fired at revolver at Ford from 40 feet away. Another lady named Olivia Sipple grabbed Sarah’s arm causing the shot to miss Ford, therefore saving his life.

  • Legionnaire’s disease strike 182 kills 29 (Date Unknown)

    Legionnaire’s disease is a form of pneumonia and comes from the American Legion which is a US military organization. This took place at the Philadelphia Hotel. 189 caught the disease and it killed 29 of them. This event didn’t only happen on one day, but over the course of a few days.

  • Red Dye #2 is banned (Date Unknown)

    Soviet scientists claimed a link between the dye and cancer in the 1970’s.The substance was banned from the US even though it was never linked to any deaths or illnesses. Consumers were so worried about Red Dye that they actually got the Mars candy company to take away l red M&Ms, even though they never contained any Red Dye No. 2 to begin with. It took 10 years for the Red Dye scare to end.

    Lesley Brown went through an experimental fertilization process called in vitro on November 10, 1977. The doctors put the fertilized egg into Lesley in a shorter time period than they had previously tried. The procedure worked, because on July 25, 1978, Lesley delivered a baby girl.

  • Nuclear Accident at Three Mile Island

    A nuclear meltdown which happened in a power plant in Pennsylvania on March 28, 1979. It was the worst accident in United States power plant history, and ended up in the release of little amounts of radioactive gases and iodine into the atmosphere. The failures included the non-nuclear secondary system, accompanied by a stuck-open PORV in the primary system, which allowed big amounts of nuclear reactor coolant to get out.   • Margaret Thatcher First Woman Prime Minister of Great Britain (No Specific Date)

    Margaret Thatcher, born on October 13th 1925, served as the British prime minister from 1979-1990. She was the only women to have ever held the post, and the longest serving politician of the 20th century. Her nickname the “Iron Lady” became associated with her policies later in her career.   • The Greensboro Massacre

    On November 3, 1979, five protest marchers, who were part of the Communist Workers Party, were shot and killed by the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party in Greensboro, North Carolina.
