  • The First English Colony (Jamestown)

    A joint-stock company known as the London Company, sent a group of English colonists known to a small area in what is present-day Virginia. This allowed the English to establish their presence in the New World.
  • New Netherlands and New Amsterdam

    In 1613, the Dutch take a land north of the New England colonies. This served as a trading posts with other economies such as Sweden, England, and the Eiroquiros.
  • Powahatan Wages War on the Jamestown Settlers

    A colonist known as John Rolfe marries Pocahontas, a native of the Powahatan, however she dies three years later. This as well as the fact that the colonists killed a Powahatan chief, cause a war between the two groups lasting 20 years until 1642.
  • The Foundation of New Hampshire

    Founded by John Mason, New Hampshire was actually planned. An amount of land was given to Mason. Eventually, he sent settlers to the fishing colony that was actually named after the county that Mason lived in. Unfortanutely, he died before seeing the colony itself.
  • Virginia is Given A Charter

    Viginia was founded in 1624 by the London Company but was eventually turned into a royal colony. Europeeans in England wanted to establish an English presence in colonial America.
  • Massachussetts is Founded, The Search for Religious Freedom Ends, Kinda

    The colony of Massachussetts was founded due to the need of religious freedom. In the late 1620's, a group of Pilgrims left England due to religious tensions in Europe. They sailed there on ship called the Mayflower. A document stating that every man had to vote in order for a course of action to take place.
  • Founding Maryland

    The colony of Maryland was established by Lord Baltimore the first and the second Lord Baltimore. This colony is proprietary colony due to the fact that King Charles gave a small group of religious people. Therefore, its purpose served as a refuge fro English Catholics
  • Founding Providence(Early Rhode Island)

    Ministers such as Roger Williams had different views on politics and religion. Puritan leaders worried about Williams's uprising, forcing him to leave Massachusetts. Thus, he forms a settlement called Providence.
  • Founding Connecticut

    A minister known as Thomas Hooker left in 1636 with a couple of settlers to found the colony of Connecticut. In 1639, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was written by Thomas Hooker, furthering the Democratic party in Connecticut's government. Therefore, he may be called the father of American Democracy.
  • Founding Rhode Island(Portsmouth)

    In Boston, Anne Hutchinson, an outspoken woman, enraged Puritan leaders just as Roger Williams did, claiming people didn't need a minister's help for their journey with God. Banished, she and other colonists formed Portsmouth, a part of Rhode Island with Providence.
  • Toleration Act

    In the events following the founding of Maryland, Protestants and Catholics continued to have religious conflicts. This caused the formation the bill known as the Toleration Act of 1649. Thus, making religious restrictions to Christians a crime.
  • One Large Carolina is Founded

    In 1663, there were no North or South Carolina. They were just one Carolina. It was founded by Knig Charles the second. Originally, it was propetiary but became royal.
  • New Netherlands & New Amsterdam Become New York & New Jersey

    Eventually, the English take control over the New Netherlands and New Amsterdam and renamed New Netherlands to New York and New Amsterdam to New Jersey. The English let the trading posts continue as their economy benefits. New York remained with Dutch influence and sucessful farming of staple crops. New Jersey remains with diverse population and slaves/indentured servants
  • Founding Pennsylvania

    The Society of Friends or the Quakers were a religious group that didn't usually follow formal religious practices. Since Christianity was the major practice for England and the colonists in the New World. Thus, Quakers were usually persecuted. One Quaker, William Penn wanted a safe haven for Quakers, therefore he went on to found the colony of Pennsylvania.
  • The Cause of North and South Carolina

    In 1712, the once Carolina was split into two Carolinas, North and South due to the difficult task of governing since the colonies were far too seperate.
  • Founding Georgia & The Hope for a Slave-Free Colony

    James Oglethorpe was the founder of Georgia. Mostly, poor people lived in Georgia. The king allowed this due to the fact that Florida, which was filled Spanish enemies, south of Georgia. Ergo, Gerogia was tasked with shielding British colonies from the Spanish.
  • Delaware's Purchase and Founding

    In 1682, the Duke of York sold a land south of Pennsylvania to William Penn. This area is the present-day Delaware. Delaware remained a part of Pennsylvania until 1776.
