The Mayflower was a ship that took people to America to settle in Jamestown. It took the pilgrims thirteen years to get to America. The were realy struggling at first with food and shelter. The pilgrims came to America for religous freedom.

Half of the pilgrims had died. They were all praying for a miracle. One day an Indian came and helped them. He could speak English. Squanto, the indian taught the pilgrims how to hunt, gather shellfish, extract sap from maple trees, and grow crops.

in 1647, Massachusets made a rule that if a town has over 50 families, they have to have at least one teacher to teach the children how to read and write.

The Mayhews were a missionary organization for Indians on the coast of Massachusets. Thomas Mayhew Started the work, and his family carried on once he died.
