  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was a law passed by Parliment that placed a tax on printed materials such as newspaper, legal documents, and playing cards. The colonists felt like it was unfair becuase they did not have a say in government. There battle cry was "NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION'! 5_The_Stamp_Act_of_1765_inspired_widespread_antagonism_This_print_satirises_the_repeal_of_the_act_in_1766_as_the_death_of_the_favourite_female_child
  • Sons of Liberty

    The Sons of Liberty was started by Samuel Adams. The Sons of Liberty was a group of colonists that led protests aginst the new tax. They burned stamps and threatend stamp agents. The stamp agents sometimes had there house attacked or destroyed.   • The Townshend Acts

    In 1767 Parlimenrt passed the Townshend law which was a law that placed a tax in goods such as tea, wool, and paper. The colonists did not like this at all! Colonists boycotted British imports.   • The Daughters of Liberty

    The Daughters of Liberty was a group of women that made tea out of herbs and berries instead of paying the tax for Britsh tea. They also weaved clothes that could be used instead of the British wool. In 1768 british war ships arrived in Boston Harbor. British leaders hoped this would convince the colonists to stop protesting but it just made the colonists more mad.

    In 1768 soldiers arrived in Boston. Fist fights with soilders and colonists were commen. The colonits called soldiers names and threatend them. In 1770 the city was very mad and angry about this, they were ready to explode! The colonists surronded Hugh White and his soldiers, his soldiers panicked and fired there guns killing five people. When it was over the British soldiers wer put to trial for murder. John Adams defended them and the court ruled that they were not guilty of murder.
  • The Commitees of Correspondence

    Samuel Adams felt that it took too long for news to travel from a colony to another so he started a group called the Comittees of Correspondence in Boston in 1772. Members of the commitees wrote to eachother about local events.     Parliment passsed a law called the Tea Act. The law said that only one British company called East India company would be the only company allowed to sell tea to the colonists. Later that year the colonists declared that ships bringing tea to the colonies would not be able to unload tea. Memebers of the Sons of Liberty disguised themselves as Mohawks and went on three British ships and chopped open the chests of tea with axes and dumped tea into the harbor, That is known as the Boston Tea Party.

    The Intolerable Acts were laws that punished Boston for the Boston Tea party. The laws were, Massachusttes was put under control of a British General named Thomas Gage, the soldiers fromn the Boston Massacre were sent back and the colonists had to house and feed them, the port of Boston was closed until the Intolerable Acts were over, and the colonistst were forced to take sides between Boston and Britin. The colonists just wanted it to end!

    The Continental Congress was a meeting in Philidelphia with people from every colony except Georgia. At the first Continental Congress they decided to stop all trades with Britin until the Intolerable Acts end and that each colony should have militias which are volenteer armies. Some militias called themselves minutemen because they would be ready to fight for Boston. The colonists just wanted the
    dispute with Britin to end peacefully.
