    The Missouri compromise was an additon of 1 slave for every free state that was annexed so that the number of slave and free states would stay balanced.
    The added to the fire of the civil war be because it was a temporary fix but not going to last.
    the senate came up with the Missouri compromise.
  • Nat Turners rebellion

    Nat Turners rebellion
    Nat Turner was an African American who was from virginia and he led a group of blacks that rebelled agaisnt slave oweners and killed almost all white they saw.
    This led to the civil war because now balcks were influenced in rebelling agasint their owners in the South.
  • Wilmont Proviso

    Wilmont Proviso
    a plan to abolosh slavery in land acquired from Mexico. this fueld the civil war because Southerns were angered by this plan and did not want to become out number in the House of Representatives.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    While President Taylor was in office, the tension was rising over slavery. Antislavery parties wanted slavery to be banned in Washington D.C. the Southerners wanted a decree that helped return fugitive, and California petitioned to become a free state. Stephen A. Douglas and Henry Clay both tried to figure out a plan but were in vain. To fix this a group of Whigs published five bills known as the Compromise of 1850.
    This comoromise wouldn't be able to last, which ultimately led to a civil war

    Fugitive slave act
    In the compromise of 1850 one of the key componets was the Fugitive slave act. The act commanded all people to return runaway slaves. If anyone decided to help the slaves then they would be thrown into prison for breaking a law. Northerners believed that this was wrong so to help the slaves the Underground Railroad was established.
    This added fire to the civil war because many Northerners did not abide by this law and instead decided to help free the slaves which made the South even more angry.

    When Senator Stephen A. Douglas said that we should repeal the Missouri Compromise many Northerners protested him, while the South agreed with him. President Pierce then passed the Kansas- Nebraska Act, which states that Kansas and Nebraska will be settled and the people will vote on if they want slavery or not.
  • Dred Scott case

    Dred Scott case
    Dred Scott was bought by an army doctor in Missouri, which was a slave state. His owner later moved his household to Illinois, which was a free state. His own eventually moved back south until he died. After he died Dred Scott sued for his freedom. He claimed that since he once lived in a free state he should be free. His case got all the way to the supreme court where he was denied and Chief Justice Taney told him he was a piece of property and was not free. This divided the country even more.
  • John Browns raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Browns raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown was an African American who led a seige on Harpers Ferry to take over an arsenal in 1859. Northern Abolitionist helped provide currency for John Brown and the small crew he led. On the day of his attack he was denied by a local militia and troops. This Attack frightened the Southerns because of what the abolitionist could do now. The raid on Harpers Ferry only fueld the civil war.
  • Lincolns election

    Lincolns election
    In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He defeated Senator Stephen A. Douglas, John Bell, and John C. Beckenridge. He recieved forty percent of the popular vote and no southern votes. When Lincoln became president the Southern States knew that he was going to do something to abolish slavery since Lincoln did not support it, although he also thought that African Americans should not be regarded as first class citizens. This upset the Southern State and many of them seceded from the union.
  • Battle at fort Sumter

    Battle at fort Sumter
    Once the South felt that war was near they started to take over all American forts in their region. The day after being inaugurated President Lincoln recieved a letter from Fort Sumter that the fort was low on supplied and the Confederate where demanding surrender. Lincoln wrote a letter to Jefferson Davis saying that he was ending supplies with unarmed soldiers. Davis then decided to attack Fort Sumter which was the start of the civil war.
