Stepping Stones to the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri Compromise- made the Northern and Southern States equal by adding Maine to be a free state and Missouri to be a slave state.
    The Missouri Compromise effected the events leading to the Civil War because the Northern and Southern States were equal leading into the Civil War. This caused a stop to some debate and also both sides, the Union and the Confederacy, would have a even playing field.
  • Nathaniel Turner's Rebellion

    Nathaniel Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner's Rebellion- Nat and other slaves revolted against any white people that stood in their way. This made slave holders even more scared becasue they were worried that other slaves would revolt like Nat Turner.
    These events may have led to the Civil War because as slave holders got more scared of their own slaves they made the slave codes more strict. Since the Northern States was against slavery this made things worse because sectionalism started to occur.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    Wilmot Proviso- made to eliminate slavery within the land acquired as a result of the Mexican War. This effected the stepping stones leading to the Civil War because Wilmot Proviso helped the Northern states but hurt the Southern states. This is because the Southern states wanted slaves and the Northern states did not.
    Since the Southern states thought that they had states' rights they should be able to have slaves. This grew even more conflict and lead towards the Civil War.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Compromise of 1850- These were five bills that said California should enter as a free state but the new terroirties would have no limits to slavery.
    This event effected the stepping stones leading towards the Civil War because America would be split up equally from the Union and the Confederacy. These bills were made so that some Southerners would not secede from the Union because of them believing in states' rights and that owning slaves was their right.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Fugitive Slave Act- made every citizen help catch runaways and anyone who aided a fugitive could be fined or imprisoned. The Fugitive Slave Act had a bitter taste towards the Northerners because they strongly disagreed about owning slaves. The Northerners wanted to try to help the runaways but this bill would stop them from doing so. They wouldn't stand for this so they decided to aid runaway slaves by the Underground Railroad.

  • The Fugitive Slave Act Continued

    The Fugitive Slave Act Continued
    The Underground Railroad and other events lead to the Civil War because many people disagreed on wither or not they should own slaves. The Union didn't want slaves while the Confederacy did. This caused two oppsing sides in the Civil War.
  • The Kansas- Nebraska Act

    The Kansas- Nebraska Act
    The Kansas- Nebraska Act- Stephen Doughlas said to abandon the Missouri Compromise and to let settlers in Kansas and Nebraska to vote if they should be a free state or a slave state. This event introduced popular sovereighnty which allowed the people to decide the outcome. This event impacted the Civil War because once people got to vote for what they believed in everyone disagreed with one another.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas- When both pro-slavery and anti-slavery people went to Kansas to vote and see the outcome of the bill many people started to protest. As this happened 800 slavery supporters attacked the town of Lawrence. They burnt down the Free State Hotel and destroyed two newspaper offices and many homes. Then anti slavery forces struck back. This event contributed to the Civil War because many people on both sides were very angery and wanted to fight for what they believed in.
  • The Dred- Scott Case

    The Dred- Scott Case
    The Dred- Scott Case- Dred Scott was a slave who lived in a free state but then moved to Missouri which was a slave state. Dred Scott argued that he spent enough time in a free state that he should noot have to work in Missouri but he should be a free person. But the court disagreed so the tension between the Norhterners and the Southerners grew.This event effected sectionalism toward both the North and the South. This also split up the Democrats from the South which would later help the North.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry- A U.S. military arsenal that was attacked by John Brown and other abolitionists. This attack made the white Southerns fear slave rebellion and increased the tension between Northern and Southern states leading up to the Civil War. This event effected the Civil War because many people grew to hate the oppsing side even more than before.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
    Lincoln's Election- Lincoln was a Northerner that stood for America being under the Union and that their should be no slaves in America. This pushed the Southern states to their breaking point. The Southern states seceded from the Union and to join the Confederate States of America.
    This event shaped the Civil War because the Southerns thought that slaves should be apart of their agriculture. The North disagreed causing the Civil War.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    Battle at Fort Sumter- an island off of the Charlston Harbor in South Carolina that was known for the first shot and battle of the Civil War. Lincoln announced that he was sending troops to Fort Sumter with ammunition and weapons. Lincoln promised that his troops wouldn't shoot unless they were shot at first. This event shaped the Civil War because the Southern states declared war on the North. As the battle ended Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas voted to join the Confederacy.
