    Missouri Compromise
    When settlers settled in Missouri, many of them brought slaves with them. By the time Missouri wanted to become a state, slavery was still allowed by its constitution. Leading up to the compromise, conflict began to rise between pro and anti-slavery groups. This conflict casued something called sectionalism. Sectionalism is when there is more loyalty to one region than to another.

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner was born into slavery on a plantion in West Virginia, while on the platation he was taught reading, wrting, and religion. When Turner was a child, he was sold three times to slave owners.

    Proposed by David Wilmot in 1846, the Wilmot Proviso would ban slavery in any place acossiatated with Mexico. THe Southerners protested any anti-slavery act becasue it would but slavey in danger everywhere.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitve Slave Act required everyone to help catch runaway slaves and anyone helped them would be fined or put in prison. Southerners thought that the Northerners would realize the rights of the Southerners because of the law. Despite the penalties, the Northerners would do anything they could to help the fugtive slaves escape into free land. The slaves would use the Underground Railroad to get to freedom. The anti-slavery groups would help the slaves get fre and free captured slaves.

    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
    The Southerners started to feel threatened by the Repubican party after the election in 1858. On October 16, 1859, John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. His main targert was an arsenal.
  • Linclon's Election

    Linclon's Election
    In November 1860 Abraham Linclon ran for office. At this time, the issue of slavery was still tearing the nation apart. The issue even split teh Democratic party in two. The nothern and southern Democrats, and both parties chose a canidate for presidet of the Confederate States. Many people in the South did not trust the Republican party in fear of losing states rights. December 1860, South Caroline voted to secede from the Union to save their rights.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
    Fort Sumter was a U.S. fort on an island guarding Charleston Harbor. Presisndet Linclon did not want to start a war with the Confederate army. Linclon sent unarmed troops to the fort. He promised that his men would not fire at the Confederates unless fired upon. Jefferson Davis made the chocie to disregard Linclons promise and order an attack on the men sent by Linclon. On April 12,1861, the Confederates fired at the Union soldiers. By April 14 they surrendered. Later started the Civil War.
