Stepping Stones to Civil War Timeline

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
Through this Compromise, Missouri and Maine were able to join as two different states. Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Because these two states where admitted one free and one slave it kept the balance of the Union. During this time the Union was very fragile and if they entered just one state then the other would get very angry and maybe suceed from the Union. At this time the Union needed a new government and I think that they didn't know a different way to run the US.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner was a man that led a group to rebel against the white slave owners. He led a riot in Southhampton County, Virginia killing 55 white people. This riot put the whole South in fear. It also cause a search for Nat Turner which resulted in him being hung. I think that it wa good for Nat Turner to show the white people that slavery was wrong, but it was worse that he killed 55 people.

The Wilmot Proviso was thought of by David Wilmot of Pennsylvania. The Wilmot Proviso stated that any land acquired by Mexico would be free. • Fugitive Slave Act Continued

    Fugitive Slave Act Continued
I think that the Northerners rebelling was a good thing. They were standing up for what they believed in. Henry David Thoreau said it well, "if the law requires you to be the [cause] of injustice to another, then I say, break the law."
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
There was a great debate on whether to let California into the Union because it would set off the balance being a free state. Henry Clay came up with a few ideas for new bills. These bills were voted on by Congress. Five bills were voted on an became laws. These bills became known as the Compromise of 1850. I think that it was good to be able to vote on different parts of the bill because all the parts wer not favorable to everybody.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was just one part of the Compromise of 1850. The Fugitive Slave Act was a law that said all people had to help catch runaway slaves. The South thought that this Act would help the North recognize slaves as their property, but all it did was show the North how evil slavery was. Many of the Northerners rebelled against this Act by helping the slaves runaway or even by back their freedom. The northern juries wouldn't convict those who broke the Fugitive Slave Act.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
Areas west of Missouri was trying to be addded as a state. According to the Missouri Compromise it should be free, but Franklin Pierce thought that each state should be able to choose if they were free or slave. This Act of popular sovereighnty in the new area became known as the Kansas-Nebraska Act. I believe that popular sovereighnty should be used for everything.
  • Dred-Scott Case Continued

    Dred-Scott Case Continued
have the right take property away from someone and Dred Scot was a slave which they considered property. I think that this verdict is unfair.
  • Dred-Scott Case

    Dred-Scott Case
The Dred-Scot Case was a very important issue in 1857. The Dred Scot Case was a case about an Affrican American who was a slave to a family in Missouri where slaves were allowed then they moved to another area where slaves weren't allowed. Once the family moved back to Missouri and the doctor who was the main owner died, Dred Scot sued or his freedom. Dred Scot sued that he should be free because he once lived in and area where slavery was banned. THe verdict of the case was that the court didn'

At Harper's Ferry, they wanted to get the weapons at the arsenal, so they could give them to the slaves in Virginia and start a revolt. want slavery to spread. Lincoln was very brave to stand up against slavery.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
In the Election of 1858 for Senator, Abraham Lincoln ran against Senator Douglas. Abraham Lincoln was "nearly an unknown." Through this election and the many debates, Abraham Lincoln gained a national reputation. When the presidential election rolled around, Lincoln had many people for him. Another reason why Lincoln won was becasue the democratic party was divided. Having these advantages helped him have a clear path to victory. His victory was a major deal for the South because he didn't want
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
Some of the states in the south had suceeded becoming the confederates. The day after Lincoln took office he got a message from Fort Sumter saying they were low on supplies and the confederates were telling them to surrender. Before the supplies could get to the fort. the Confederates had already siezed it. Thankfully no lives were lost at this battle. This battle is a great example of how the South tried hard to get what they wanted and kept perservering through the struggles.
