  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise preseverd the balance between slavce and free states in the senate. It also brought about a temporary lull in the debate over slavery. The Compromise made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. This may have led to the Civil War because this was a huge debate in the senate and it also banned slavery in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase north of 36'30' latitude. Henry Clay produced this bill through the House of Reprensatives.

    Nathaniel Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner's Rebellion was an attack on the whites. Nat's army killed 55 white men, woman, and children. October 30 Nat was captured and later killed on november 11. This led to a turning point of fighting back against slave holders and american citzens. This rebellion was in Southhampton County, Virgina.

    The Wilmot Proviso banned slavery in any lands that might be acquired from Mexico. Southerners protested. They believed that any antislavery policy about the territories endangered slavery everywhere. They wanted Calfornia and New Mexico to remai open to slavery. This wasnt the most huge parts of why the civil war or how it led up to it.

    Senator Henry Clay tried to find a comprise that would make Califorina enter as a free state, while the rest of the new territores would have no limit on slavery. While Senator Calhoun opposed Clay's Plan. He felt like the union could saved only by protecting slavery. After President Taylor died unexpectedly; Congress passed five bills in 1850 known as the Compromie of 1850. This led to the civil war becuase of alll the drama in the senate.

    As part of the Comrpomise of 1850, Henry Clay convinced Congress to pass the Fugtive Slave Act as an attempt to pacify slaveholders. The slave act helped citizens to catch runaways. Anyone who aided a fugtive could be fined or imprisoned. People in the south belived the law would force Northernes to recoginze the rights of Southerners but instead the act angered the north. This led to a turning point of the north's belief about slavery and now they statred to help the slaves with the railroad.

    Stephen A. Douglas's plan to repeal the Missouri Compromise would allow slavery in parts that have been free in 30 years. Southerners excpted slavehiolders to settle in this land. Right after the law was passed antislavery groups rushed into Kansas. in may of 1856, 800 slavery suppportes attacked the town of Lawerence, a stronghold of antislavery stellers. They burned down homes and hotels. This was a huge spark of this not become in arguement but a war..

    Dred Scott was an enslaved african american bough by an army doctor in Missouri, a slave state.In the 1830s, the doctor moved his household to Illinois, a free state, and then to the Wisconsin Territor, where slavery was banned by the Northwest Ordinace of 1787. Later the family returned to Missouri, and the doctor died and Dred Scott escaped.Dred Scott claimed he should be free becayse he once lived in the north where slavery was banned. The court ruled that dred scott wasnt free. This angred .

    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown raid on harper ferry was to get to an arsenal. Brown hoped to arm enslaved African Americans and start a revolt against slaveholders. Abolitionists had paid for the raid. Brown raid was defeated by local citizens and federal troops. Brown was sentenced to hang to death. John brown defeat rallied abolitionists. The nation was on the brick of disater. This is a huge part of how our nation starts to divide.

    Lincoln was nominated by the Republicans to be president. The reason he won was because all the drama with the democrats. The Republicans promised not to disturb slavery but they did. This was one of the turning points inthe war.
