    Thomas Savery was an English military engineer and inventor who in 1698, patented the first crude steam engine, based on Denis Papin's Digester or pressure cooker of 1679. Thomas Savery had been working on solving the problem of pumping water out of coal mine. His machine which created a vacuum which sucked more water out of the mine shaft through a bottom valve.
  • The Steamboat

    John Fitch builds a steam-powered vessel, The Steamboat, for the Delaware River in New Jersey. He received the first U.S. patent for his steam-powered riverboat design . He built four successful steamboats but faied to receive financial backing for his invention.
  • Canals

    Canals are waterways constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland . They connect the East with the Great Lake states. They also provided cheap and efficient transportation for goods.
  • The Turnpike

    The turnpike was basically a toll road. The money that was collected at the toll was used to pay for the road and keep it in good condition.
  • Railroads

    Railroads
    The Railroad were faster than steamboats when transportating goods and supplies. It connected distant regions of the United States. The settlement of Western territories increased when Railroads came about.
