  • Board of Education of Hendrik Hudson School District v. Rowley

    The school district- Amy Rowley did not need an interpreter. Rowley family- necessity for Amy to have a sign language interpreter due to her being deaf. The Court ruled that an IEP must be used to establish educational need, but schools are not required to provide every resource necessary. The significance was that public schools must provide a FAPE for disabled students. Also, it does not require states to maximize potential.

  • Burlington School Committee v. Massachusetts Board of Education

    The student was placed in a private school that better served his educational needs at the expense of the town. The town refused to pay. The court ruled that the EHA allows for reimbursement of expenses regardless of the school. This ruling allows for the disabled student to get a FAPE. Also gives more rights to the parents. The parents have the right to challenge proposed IEP's.

  • Honig v. Doe

    Doe was suspended from school pending an investigation following an attack against a student and school property. The court upheld the "stay put" provision under the EHA. This stops schools from excluding disabled children from the classroom for disruptive behavior while pending review. Schools must now determine whether or not the misbehavior is a manifestation of the student's disability. States must now offer support to students when the schools cannot.

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Originally called the All Handicapped Children Act. IDEA provided a free appropriate public education to children with disabilities as well as providing supports and services for the disabled student through special education. IDEA is important because it allows for the students to access services to provide for successful learning. By creating an IEP and IDEA's emphasis on LRE, the student is able to be placed in the general education classroom (inclusion).

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act

    The ADA is a civil rights law that protects people with disabilities. The ADA prohibits the discrimination against disabled individuals in schools, work, transportation, and all areas of public life. The ADA has supported students with disabilities by requiring schools to open all extracurricular activities and create accessible facilities to all students with disabilities.
