    There was no public schooling available for children with special needs and during this time asylums were opened but they served to take care of the children instead of teaching them, and we're not always the best places.

    In 1869, Boston established the first public day school for the deaf. This was a small step forward but it only help a few and they were still separated from others. The school is still running today (https://youtu.be/bogHJwk9Pfg)

    This was not a good time for special education as the thoughts of eugenics were spread by Francis Galton and others. Eugenics was the sterilization of the disabled to get rid of the impurities. Some of Francis Galton's essays

    During this time special classes were made in order to teach special education students, but over time many issues arose and we saw the problems with keeping them separate from other students.
  • 1947

    In 1947 Willowbrook State school opened and started admitting kids with disability's by the 50s they had 4000 kids, conditions were terrible and the place was eventually shutdown.

    Brown v Board of Education. They ruling said that separate places of education we're not equal which lead the start of changes to allow special education reform.

    "The first law that was created was section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 was created to prevent discrimination against all individuals with disabilities in programs receiving federal funds." This kept the movement of special education moving in the correct direction.

    The education of all handicapped children act was passed by president Ford. this was an attempt to get 1 million children with disability's still in the United States. This was an even bigger step forward making it so all kids not matter how disabled had a right to education

    During the time the Regan was in office we took a step back from special education during this time people were trying to take back some of the power the government had and give it back to states, because of this resegeration of special education students took place. This lasted for 10 years untill 1990 when it was again desegregate with the reauthorization of the EHA.

    Now during this time we are looking to include more technology in kids IEP plans and using technology to help kids in special education have the best possible education they can have.
