  • Puss Gets the Boot

    The first episode of a beloved show, Tom and Jerry, released the first episode titled "Puss Gets the Boot".
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board is a landmark case for education that started the long battle of integrating schools. Not only was it important for all students to be integrated for racial equality and equity. It was even more important for black students with disabilities who were even furthered deprived of the resources they needed in segregated schools.
  • TV in Color!

    Colored televisions were made available to the public to purchase.
  • Hello, I'm Dolly

    Dolly Parton's first album was released which was titled "Hello, I'm Dolly".
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

    President Lyndon B. Johnson signed this act into law in 1965. Its purpose served to create equal access to education for all students, regardless of background. It also included starting to implement federal funding for schools with students who were at a disadvantage due to poverty.
  • Loving v. Virginia

    A landmark supreme case that struck down the laws that banned interracial marriage in all states. This is important as I am mixed race!
  • Mills v. Board of Education

    In this landmark case from D.C, students who had mental disabilities, learning disabilities, and behavioral issues were labeled as "exceptional". These "exceptional" students were no longer able to be denied public educational opportunities, because of Mills V. Board of Education.
  • Public Law 94-142

    Public Law 94-142, also known as the "The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975", was signed in by President Gerald Ford. This law would be the beginning of what would know now as special education. It was meant to ensure that children with disabilities had a right to education.
  • OCD

    Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, better known as OCD, was added to the third edition of the DSM.

  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    President Reagan signed this act into law in 1986. This law gave more power to the parents of students with disabilities, to be able to speak on the development and creation of their child's IEP.
  • Public Law 101-476

    Public Law 101-476 was signed to update Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Law. The law was now more inclusive to those with autism and traumatic brain injuries. PL 101-476 also created an ITP, Individual Transition Plan, which was for students' life after they exit the school system. This was an addition to the IEP.
  • IDEA Compliance Report

    This report, released by the National Council on Disability, contained federal data on the enforcement of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). It showed that there was a severe lacking in the Board of Education and the government enforcing IDEA. Over 2/3 of states were not meeting the requirements, not meeting students needs.

  • IDEA Amendment

    IDEA was amended to better special education, which included pushing for early intervention. Another important part of this amendment was if there were a disproportionate number of minorities in those special ed classrooms, districts needed to provide more funding to the school.
