Fray Marcos and Esteban went to explore texas because of the 7 cities of gold that De Vaca said he heard of. Esteban got killed by the indians. Fray marcos reported that he had seen the 7 cities of gold.

The two cities he searched for was "Cibola" and "Quivira". His second guide was the Turk. He was killed because he lied to them about Quivira being a city of gold. Is important because they were the first Europeans to see the Grand Cnyon.
