Shark Attack
While Bethany is laying on her board in the water, a shark creeps up on her. It attacks her; biting off her left arm and a large chunck of her surfboard. -
The Hospital
Bethany paddles to shore with the help of her friend and Alana's dad. Alana's brother goes ahead to call an ambulance. They get to shore and the ambulance takes her to the hospital. The trip takes about forty-five minutes. -
Surgery
Bethany goes into surgery as soon as she gets to the hospital. She lost a lot of blood. The surgeon cut the nerve ends on her severed arm to help reduce the potential for phantom pain. -
Halloween Morning
On this Halloween morning,Bethany's mom gets her up to go look for beaches with good waves. -
Looking for Waves
Bethany's mom drives her around the small island in their van, the Blue Crush. They look for a beach with good waves so Bethany can go surfing. They don't find any good beaches. -
Tunnels Beach
They drive to Tunnels Beach. There they see Bethany's best friend Alana with her brother and dad. Bethany decides to stay and wait for waves with them. -

Healing in the Hospital
Bethany spends the next six days in the hospital, recovering. Tons of visitors brings her flowers and cards. -
Fame
Bethany does interviews for tons of magazines and TV shows. Fans and supporters send her thousands of letters a day. -
Thanksgiving Day
Bethany decides not to give up on doing what she loves; surfing. This is the first time since her accident that she goes surfing. It's hard at first, but eventually she gets it. -
Competative Surfing-Again
Bethany decides to start surfing in competitions again. She trains at every opportunity. -
Busy Life
Over the next five years, Bethany starts competative surfing again. She travels around the globe for this. She also finishes school, does a lot of interveiws, and was even in a car commercial. She taught two young girls how to surf through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and she goes on mission trips with her church. She goes sky-diving twice, and her family starts the Friends of Bethany Foundation. -
Soul Surfer- The Movie
Sony Pictures wants to make a movie telling Bethany's story. They start making the movie, and Bethany makes sure that they tell her story correctly! -
Finishing the Movie
A year later, they finish the movie. Bethany is proud of how it turned out. -
Bethany Today
Bethany is now nineteen. She is a professional surfer; one of the best in the world. -
Her Life
Today Bethany still does everything she does to honor God. She trains every day and when she isn't training, she's doing surf competitions.
