The men in Kommando 59-B using the explosives in hand made grenades blew up the crematorium, which burst into flames. After cutting the barbed-wire fence, the prisoners got away into the nearby woods.

By 1943, Sonderkommandos reached up to 400 people. Then in 1944, Jews from Hungary were deported there, which swelled the group to have over 900 people.

At Treblinka, 200 men were in charge of disposing the dead bodies from the gas chambers. At Auschwitz the Sonderkommando working in the crematoria initially numbered 400 men, but the number was raised during the mass murder of Hungarians in 1944 to about 1,000 men.

Although the Sonderkommando had better working conditions than the rest of the prisoners, most were eventually gassed from sickness or being to weak from working in camps. And whatever prisoner witnessed this, would be killed as well.

In October of 1944, the Sonderkommando team at Birkenau eventually found out that the SS was going to gas them. Sonderkommandos decided to take their fate into their own hands, and, on October 7, the Birkenau Three Sonderkommando, rebelled. They attacked the SS with makeshift weapons: stones, axes, hammers, other work tools and homemade grenades. But, were eventually captured and the rest of the escapees were as well.

Roza Robota was one of the organizers of an operation to smuggle explosives for use by members of the Sonderkommando.

the SS identified five women, four of them Jewish, who had been involved in supplying explosives to blow up a crematorium used to burn the bodies of Nazi murder victims. All five women were killed.
