  • Federalist

    They believed in a strong nation. Held that capital and industry were the basis of a healthy republic. Businessmen, bankers, and merchants supported the federalists.
  • Democrats

    Were the successors of Jeffersonian democracy. Believed in westward expansion. Made up of Northern artisans.
  • Republicans

    Grew out of resistance to the Kansas, Nebraska act. Aborted anti-slavery. Endorsed a protective tariff.
  • Constitutional Union Party

    Was the anti-extremist party. United in order to block a Republican victory. Didn't want to vote Democratic and Northern Whigs.
  • American Party

    Didn't want to vote Democratic and Northern Whigs. Organized into a secret order. Made up of mostly ex-Whigs who were anti-Catholic.
  • Whigs

    Were split by the annexation from the Mexican War. Attempted to offset this damage by declaring no platform. Formed out of the National Republican Party.
