    LiveJournal was founded in 1999. It was the first blogging sites started to become popular, and this form of social media is still very popular today.

    Wikipedia was launched in 2001.

    2002 Friendster
    Friendster emerged in 2002. This Malaysian-built platform, now defunct, was initially used as a social networking service website.

    2003 saw the emergence of LinkedIn. Its unique selling point is obvious to anyone who uses it.
