    The #MeToo movement started in 2017 as a way to raise awareness and show support for women who have been sexually abused. Women took to Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to share their experience with sexual abuse/assault, or just to simply share the hashtag, #MeToo, indicating that they have been affected by this abuse as well. This was a trending hashtag for quite sometime and was a powerful tool in women's movements.

    Protests for Racial Justice BLM. (2020-Ongoing)

    Racial injustices have been occurring far longer than 2020, however, the death of George Floyd sparked the start of the BLM movement. People took to social media to spread information about the protests, and also misinformation about those same protests. People on Instagram would post a solid black photo on "blackout Tuesday" to show their support for the BLM movement.

    The COVID-19 pandemic turned very controversial when the vaccination was released to the public. Conflict broke out among the different political parties and information/misinformation spread everywhere. Facebook and Instagram were popular social media apps that would be used by individuals to choose their side.

    Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade (2022)

    On June 24th the Supreme Court overturned the federal right to abortion in all 50 states, otherwise known as, Roe vs. Wade. This was a major disruption on social media. In addition to protests in the streets, people used social media to share their opinion on the matter. Popular catchphrases such as, "my body my choice" were posted on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

    Conflict between Israel and Palestine dates back to the end of the 19th century. However, in recent news, war between the two countries has begun and the effects are horrific. Social media has been a tool to communicate the situation for the people in those countries and also as a way to gather money for the people in need. Thousands of dollars have been raised via social media to aid those people.
