Social Media Disruptions

  • Love Wins

    Love Wins

When the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, social media created #lovewins to allow people to follow along with in real-time what was happening and post about their feeling. Couples, brands, supporters began posting pictures using the hashtag. Facebook created rainbow profile picture borders and stickers you could add to show your support and excitement about the ruling.
  • Me Too

    Me Too

The Me Too movement started in 2006 to raise awareness of women who had been sexually abused, harassed, and assaulted. The disruption blew up on social media in 2017 when a Hollywood producer was accused of sexual assault. Social media created a platform for women to share their stories using #MeToo and bring attention to a large issue that hadn't been seriously addressed previously.
  • Women's March

    Women's March

Social media was used to organize the 2017 Women's March protests. The event started wholely with one Facebook post that quickly grew. A Facebook group was created and people were joining and interested in marching. Videos and pictures were being posted on social media platforms and many hashtags pertaining to the event were used and created to show participants support for women's rights as human rights and their hatred for former Pres. Trump.
  • Black Lives Matter

    Black Lives Matter

The BLM movement started in 2013 but I noticed it go viral in 2020 with the death of George Floyd. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook were used for this disruption with the organization of protests, videos and pictures of rallies and riots, along with the virality of the hashtag #blacklivesmatter.
  • Pizzagate

    Pizzagate

Pizzagate is a conspiracy about child-trafficking that started in 2016 on online forums and blew up during 2016 presidential election. After debunked and suppressed as fake news, Tik Tok is bringing rise to the PizzaGate conspiracy theories again. Younger generation posts videos and pictures connecting stories to large celebrities. Social media sites are providing ways for individuals to share, comment, and like posts regarding their thoughts and suspicions on the issue.
