  • Six Degrees

    This was the year that the “Six Degrees” had a peak of about 1 million members. This was a social media where you could create profiles and friend one another.
  • LiveJournal

    This year is when “LiveJournal” was a platform where others could blog as a form of keeping friend and family or others in their lives updated with their own life.
  • LinkedIn

    “LinkedIn” came in place in this year, which is a social media site that gave users a place to post their resume and privately message people with a business-oriented mind. It is also still very popular to this day for businesses to scout for new employees and Universities use this platform as well.
  • Gmail & Facebook

    Google created their own emailing service called “Gmail” and it is still used today in the US and the UK as well. This is also the year that “Facebook” launched. When it was first created it was initially limited to Harvard students, but months after, it became worldwide with 2.2 billion users.
  • YouTube

    The platform “YouTube” was birthed, which is a way users can upload and share videos. This platform is available in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Myspace & Twitter

    The year that “Myspace” became the most popular social network in the US during this year. This was also the year that “Twitter” was launched publicly on July 15th.
  • Venmo

    The app “Venmo” was created for people to send money to one another where you can request or pay your friends.
  • Instagram

    “Instagram” was created. It is a photo-sharing app where you can share your photos to your friends and family.
  • Snapchat

    “Snapchat” was launched this year, which is an image messaging app used on a smartphone, where you can send images that go up for either 24 hours or however many seconds you choose.
  • Vine

    The short video social platform “Vine”, which is a video hosting service specializing in short videos, went public this year.
  • Mark Zuckerberg

    Mark Zuckerberg testifies before Congress. The world sees how weird becoming one of the world’s richest humans can make you. This is also the year that Cambridge Analytica harvest troves of user data without their consent and used this data for political purposes.
