A black would know when the house they were arriving at was safe. How did they know this? Well "station masters" as they called the owners of the safe houses, would for example put a candle in the window, or leave a quilt at night sitting outside. These little sings told slaves it was safe for them to knock on the door. Sometimes people who wanted to turn slaves in would leave these items out, so a slave would say something along the lines of " a friend of a friend sent me".(next event)
