  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise is also known as the Compromise of 1820. The 36' 30' line was established. The 36' 30'line stated that anything below it was a slave state and anything above it was a free state. The Missouri Compromise was established so Missouri could have slavery because Missouri was above the 36' 30' line. The first part of the Missouri Compromise was Missouri would be a slave state. Also Maine would join to be a free state. So it would keep the balance between slave and free states.
  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    Nat Turners Rebellion
    Nat Turner lead the slave rebellion. There was 60 to 70 slaves in the group. About 60 plantation owners and their families were killed in this rebellion. Nat Turner was tried in court and found guilty. He was executed by hanging. Black Codes were passed. One Black Code is the slaves were not aloud to meet in more than gourps of 5 people.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 stated that California would join the US as a free state and the South would get the Fugitive Slave Law. The Fugitive Slave Law stated that any runaway slaves had to be returned to their plantations they came from and if someone knew about a runaway slave and did not send them back they got fined or put in jail. Also there was no slave trade in Washington D.C. Another part is Texas had to give up the land they were fighting for and they would get ten million dollars.
  • The Kansas- Nebraska Act

    The Kansas- Nebraska Act
    The territory earned the nickname "bleeding Kansas". It got this name from the death toll rising so much. Kansas Became a free state on Jan. 26, 1861.The president during this was Franklin Pierce. John Brown lead the anti-slavery forces. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise. This act stated to let the people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide wether or not they wanted slavery. Pro-Slavery people were charged with election fraud. Steven Douglass came up with this constitution. North was angry.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas turned into a bloody battlerground. They were fighting over wether Kansas should be a free state or a slave state. Violence erupted in Kansas. It was great soil for farming. Also people thought that it was not going to be fair to have two more slave senates. Then the free and slave states would not be balanced.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott was a slave. He was trying to file a law suit against his owner. The reason is they once were in free territory. Taney, his owner, said he was an inferior race and without rights. Also as a slave, Scott was property. Another thing is under the fifth Amendment congress had to protect the right of the slave owner, not the slave. Congress had to protect slavery through out the Union.Government relized that they can not stop the spread of slavery.

    Underground Railroad
