    William Lloyd Garrison
    -Born Newbaryport,Mass.
    -Died NYC, May,24,1879
    -Editor of the anti-slavery newspaper "Liberator"
    -Founder of the American Anti-Slavery Society
    -He had a history of printing and writing
    -His most famous quote-"I am in earnest - I will not equivocate - I will not excuse - I will not retreat a single inch - and I will be heard."
  • Missouri Comprimise

    Missouri Comprimise
    -Decided what to do ith the new state of Missouri
    -Missouri added to the union as a slave state
    -Maine was added as a free state
    -All land north of the 36'30' line would be free
  • Nat Tuner's Rebellion

    Nat Tuner's Rebellion
    -A local preacher named Nat Turner led a group of about 65 slaves
    -The killed over 60 slave owners and families starting at Nat's slave house with the Travis family
    -In the end this proved to be a bad decision for the s;aves as new laws were passed in the south about slavery

  • Comprimise of 1850

    Comprimise of 1850
    -Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas came up with this
    -California was admittedas a free state.
    -The territories on in the Mexican American war were splity into territories
    -Slave trade is outlawed in Washington D.C.
    -Texas had to give up the land it was fighting for in return for 10 million dollars
    -The Fugitive slave law says all runaway slaves are to be caught and returned to their owners, causing a mass migration to Canada

    -Network of secret people, places, and resources that guided slaves north to freedom
    -Saw most use between 1850-1860
    -A Harriet Tubman, or Moses, made at least 19 trips south to help enslaved people escape to freedom
  • Kansas-Nebraska Acts

    Kansas-Nebraska Acts
    -Allowed Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether to allow or deny slavery.
    -This act did away with the Missouri Comprimise.
    -caused Political unrest earning the nickname bleeding Kansas
    -Kansas was eventually added to the union as ma free state in January 29, 1861

    -A series of violent evnts that took palce from 1854to 1858.
    -Involved disagreements between pro-slavery and anti-slavery views weather Kansas should be free or not
    - Took place in the territory of Kansas
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    -Born a slave in 1799
    -In 1856 Dred Scott and his wife sued his owner, Mrs.Emerson, for their freedom.
    -In the Circut Court Of Missouri the Scotts lost their first suit then won their second.
    -Then they took the problem to the Supreme Court in 1857, Scott lost.
    - The verdict was that slaves were property not people.
    -Secondly, it state stated that the Missouri was unconstitionual and therefore void.
    - In 1857 the Scotts gained their freedom, a year later Dred Scott died a free man.
  • Presidential Election of 1860

    Presidential Election of 1860
    Between Abraham Lincoln, a Republican
    -John C. Breckenrich,a Southren Democrat
    -John Bell, a Constitutional Union
    -Stephen Douglas a Democrat
    -Abraham Lincoln won reciving 180 electoral votes, not a single vote from the South.
    - The South felt this unfair and betrayed
    -This would become one of the most contraverial elections ever and one of the major events that led up to the civil war
    -Lincoln personaly was an abolisionist but he felt it nessacary for the South's econemy
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    -After South Carolina seceded from from the union, LIncoln sent supplies to a small union fort located in a bay along the Carolina coast.
    -Shortly after Confederate troops opned fire and attacked Frot Sumter.
    -The Union supply ships arrived but did not attempt to reach the fort.
    -Shortly after Fort Sumter fell.
