The Middle Passage was a triangular trade route between Europe, Africa and the US. Africans were kidnapped and taken on this passage to be sold into slavery. The journey on the middle passage took months and had horrible conditions for the captured Africans. This is an significant event because it made america reliant on having slaves as their workforce. -
The Missouri Compromise was that, in exchange for Missouri being a free state, Maine would become a slave state. The compromise also banned slavery north of Missouri's boarder. This even was significant because it was the beginning of the north vs south slavery debate, that eventually lead to the civil war.

The underground railroad was secret routes used by enslaved Africans to escape to free states or Canada. People that were part of the underground railroad helped escaped slaves and gave them shelter. The underground railroad was significant because it lead to the civil war and also allowed many slaves to be able to escape to free states.

Nat Turner's rebellion was a rebellion lead by Nat Turner that included many Virginian slaves. During the rebellion many died, but almost all were white. Slaves accused of being part of the rebellion were beaten or even executed. This was a significant event because it lead to the passing of laws against slave education, movement and assembly and encouraged people to be pro slavery.

The Fugitive Slave Clause was part of the 1850 compromise. It required slaves, especially free slaves who had escaped to return to their owners. If any slaves were found, they were to be tried by the federal government. This resulted in many free black people being captured illegally and being sold into slavery. -
A series of bills passed to end slave trade in Washington DC in exchange for it being easier for the south to capture run away slaves. Northerners were to bring escaped slaves back to their home in the South. In addition, California became a free state in exchange for no slavery restrictions in the territories of Utah and New Mexico. Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and published in 1851. Harriet Beecher Stowe was an abolitionist and stood up for anti-slavery. "I did not write it (Uncle Tom's Cabin). God wrote it. I merely did his dictation." -Harriet Beecher Stowe. The impact this anti-slavery book had in the United States and even Great Britain was huge. It was the second selling book of that time, the first being the Bible. The book is about a slave's life. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act in 1854 that let Kansas and Nebraska decide for themselves whether they wanted slavery in their states or not. This caused a violent effect, Bleeding Kansas. Both the people who wanted slavery and didn't went to Kansas to fight for their territory. -
The Dred Scott Case was the case of Dred Scott, a slave who went to court to ask for his freedom in 1857. He claimed he was a free man, stating that his owner had lived in a free state for four years. Later, he went to supreme court as a result of two opposing decisions. A man named Roger B. Taney decided that since Scott was an enslaved man, he had no right to bring his case to court. -
John Brown was an abolitionist. His raid on Harper's Ferry was an effort to fight for his freedom as well as the freedom of other slaves like him. The raid failed and some of Brown's sons as well as some of his followers died. Brown was tried for murder and was found guilty. But 6 years later, slavery became illegal and John Brown's dream had come true. -
A proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln during the civil war freeing all slaves in rebel states. He passed this three years into the civil war and it brought an end to the bloody battle. This was significant because it is what brought an end to the civil war and to slavery.
