    from philadelphia he traveled to new york staying in the home of david ruggles. 11 days after his arrival in new york city his fiance anna murray met him. they married on september 15th, 1838 and changed their last name to johnson. soon after moving to bedford mass. they decided to use the last nmae of Douglass instead. fredrick douglass subscribed to the liberator and was an active parhapant at abolitionist meetings.
