Slavery and the Events Leading up to the Civil War

    Underground Railroad

    When slaves were on the Underground Railroad they would use alot of resources to get them to them from the south the north. One resource they used was called Drinking Gourd. They used this resouce at night to use the stars to help them. They use the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper to find the North star to get them thought the night. Alot of slaves escaped from the upper south to get to Canada. Harriet Tubman was a famous conductor of the Underground Road.

    Underground Railroad 2

    Harriet Tubman took 19 Trips down south to get more slaves and take them to freedom.When she went back down to the south to get her husband he already remarried. The most famous abolitionist was Levi Coffin he was the president of the Underground Railroad. Conductors had to use code words to let people know they had slaves. A friend with friends means that an arrival of slaves are coming.

    I chose these dates because March 20 1787 was when the underground railroad was in use. December 6 1865 was when slaves stopped using the underground railroad.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    This Compromise was established because of the 36'30 line. Anything laying below 36'30 is slave territory. Anything north of 36'30 is free. When Missiouri applied for statehood it became a slave state. Even though Missouri was above the 36'30 it was still considered a slave state. I chose this date because the missouri compromise was made a law on this day

    Abolitionist- William Still

    William Still was taken to slavery even though he was born free in New Jersey . William's Mother was a slave, but she escaped from the south to get to a free state. When William became older he moved to Philadelphia, Pa he was a clerk for the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. William had helped 800 slave escape to freedom. I chose William still as my abolishonist because he helped over 800 slaves to freedom and even helped his brother he didn't even know
  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    Nat Turners Rebellion
    On August 22, 1831 Nat Turner killed his plantation owner Mr. Travis and his entire family. After this rebellion Nat Turner was jailed. While Nat was in jail a local lawyer named Thomas Gray interviewed him. Mr. Gray wrote a book about Nat Turner named The Confessions of Nat Turner. The court had made another decison to reimbursh or pay back the plantation owners for the slaves they have lost. I chose this date because this is when Nat Tuners Rebellion started.

    When the states passed these laws they hoped they would prevent another rebellion from happening. These laws were still active though out the civil war time.

    After the rebellion many stories spread. When people told these stories they hoped that the rebellion would not spread. Alot of plantation owners and there families were nervous after Nat Turners rebellion. When the rebellion was over slaves could not do alot of things slaves were not aloud to vote, they couldn't own property, and they could not testify in court. Those are just three of the thing slaves could not do there were many more things they couldn't do.

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise of 1850 was to keep the balance between slave and free states. They wanted to keep the same balance, but when California became a state there would be more free states than slave states. When Henry Clay(the great compromiser) became sick he still tried to find a soultion to the compromise. John C. Calhoun (senator from S.C.) he wanted slavery in the western territories. i chose this date because the Compromise of 1850 was established then.

    When this act was passed it still included the 36'30 line anything passed the 36'30 was free anything below that was slave territory. At the time Franklin Pierce was the president and he was in support of pro-slavery decision. John Brown stepped in and wanted slavery in Kansas. When they started to fight John Brown called it "Bleeding Kansas." When the pro-
    slavery suppoters went to court they were charged with fraud.i chose this date because this was the day Kansas Nebraska act started.

    On January 29,1854, just before the start of the civil war, Kansas was finally admitted as a free state to the United states of America. The pro-slavery finally won.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas was lead by John Brown. He went into peoples homes at night dragged them out of there beds and to them outside and killed them. This violence won them the name "bleeding kansas." Topeka Kanasa was the capital of the anti-slavery government. Lawrence Kansas was an abolitionist town this is were "Bleeding Kansas" began. I chose this date because this is the day John Brown started "bleeding kansas"
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott sued his owner for his freedom. Scott lived in free states for 12 years and he considered himself a free citizen. He went to supreme court and fought for his freedom but lost. So Scott was sold back to the blow family from Mrs. Emerson. The next year the blow family gave Scott and his family there freedom. I chose this date because this is when Scott testified in court for freedom.

    Abraham Lincoln became president with NO southern votes and won all of the northern votes and western votes. 180 people voted for Abraham Lincoln. New Jersey was a divded state some people voted for Abraham Lincoln the half voted for Stephan Douglas. John Breckinridge won all of the southern votes plus Delaware and Maryland. John Bell won
    all of the borader states. Stephan Douglas won half of New Jersey and Missouri. I chose this date because this is when Abraham Lincoln was elected president.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    When Lincoln sent ships in with supplies, but President Davis ordered P.G.T Beaureguard to have fort sumter surrender. Anderson didn't want to give it up so Beaureguard would have to take it by force. The nation was torn apart from this war. I chose this date because this is when Fort Sumter fell down
