Words such as Packages, Hams, Parcels, Boxes ,etc. were used as a way to let other stations (safe houses for slaves) They used these railroad terms because so many actual railroads were being built around the country it wasn’t an uncommon topic for someone to write about.

    The underground railroad was a system of passages and trails leading to freedom. Slaves usually from the deep south would run away from their plantations, helped by groups of abolitionists. there were many different ways the abolitionists communicated usually by letter. However slaves weren't just allowed to run plantation owners would hire slave catchers to bring back the slaves. This is why it’s called the underground railroad, they were very secretive and in their letters they used railroad

    On August 22nd and 23rd in 1831 in Ampton Virginia on the travis plantation a rebellion began Nat turner led a group of 60 or 70 slaves to liberate plantations by killing the owners. Nat turner was a man of god but believed that he had to do it. When Attacking a plantation all owners including White men women and children were Killed. The white people were scared and started attacking innocent slaves or even free black people. Over 200 slaves would be killed by the act of these rebels.

    (Start of trial) The dred scott case was a trial about a slave who got sold to a man who moved them to a free state. when scott tried to bring it to court they said he isn't and never will be a citizen. He later did have a case but after 11 years he lost and remained a slave but his former master's son bought him and his wife and freed them and his childhood friend helped pay for his court bill, he died 9 months later
