    21 March 1787 to December 6th 1865.. The Underground Railroad is a network of secret paths and roadways that go threw the south to Canada. The slaves who ran away had many options of routes they could go on. they could go threw the Appalachian Mountains, swamps, get a ride on a boat or they could just walk up the most common path.     Thomas Garrett

    Thomas Garrett lived from August 21 1789 to January 25th 1871. Thomas Garrett was one of the most active stationmasters in history. He was fined such large amounts once for helping runaway slaves he almost went bankrupt. He helped more than 2700 slaves escape to freedom. He paid approximately $5400 in fines. He also worked with Harriet Tubman. When he died he said he wanted blacks to carry him to his grave and have a Quaker funeral. in short thats why Thomas Garrett is an Abolitionist.

    On March 3rd 1820The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was about how states became free and slave states. The 36-30 line was how we got free and slave states. If they were under the 36-30 line they were slave states, but if they were over it they were free states. The South thought that Missouri should be slave because the 36-30 line went through it. But the North thought that it should stay free. The states ended up balancing out with equal number of states.in short this is the Missouri Compromise.

    Nat Turner led 60 to 70 slaves in August 22-23 1831 it took place in Southampton Virginia. He killed the whole Travis family who was his slave owners and 60 other families. Then Virginia sent 3000 militia troops after him and the other slaves. The militia killed 200 blacks even tho they were innocent. This rebellion lasted 48 hours. They later caught Nat Turner and hung him. After the rebellion was over they still killed blacks for nothing and put a law out called the black codes.

    On January 29, 1850, Henry Clay presented a Compromise. He presented it because California wanted to be a free state. California did become a free state from this Compromise.Washington D.C outlawed slave trade. The fugitive Slave act came with the Compromise. The Fugitive slave act is an act that required citizens to assist in the recovery of fugitive slaves. It also Fugitives right to a jury. Many slaves in the North had to flee to Canada. This is the Compromise of 1850.

    On May 30th 1854 Congress passed the Kansas Nebraska Act. The act let Kansas and Nebraska decide if they wanted to be free or slave states. It started by Stephen Douglas wanting to link Chicago to the West by railroads. He wanted Chicago to be a train Hub. Douglas said they should forget about the 36’30 line. Douglas was called a sell out to the slave power. This is also the reason he did this act was to get votes to try and be president. In short this is the Kansas Nebraska Act

    On May 1st 1856 the first act of violence was in Lawrence Kansas. Tensions in the Kansas territory started when the Kansas Nebraska Act came into law. Anti Slavery settlers from New England moved to Kansas to fight against slave power. It was called a mini civil war. John Brown killed 5 men in front of their families in retaliation to Lawrence Kansas. Pro slavery settlers moved to Kansas illegally to vote so that it would become a slave state. In short this is Bleeding Kansas.

    The Dred Scott Case
    On March 6th 1857 blacks could not be a citizen. Dred Scott was a slave that his owner took him to a free state then back to a slave state. So Scott thought he should be a free man. So he tried to sew for his freedom. That's when the supreme court said blacks were never citizens therefore they could not try to sew. So he remained a slave and then years later Scott's friend Peter Blows bought him and his wife out of slavery. Then nine months later Dred Scott died. In short this is the Dred Scott

    The Raid on Harpers Ferry
    On October 16th 1859 the raid on Harpers Ferry happened. John Brown wanted to get guns from the arsenal to give to the slaves. He had 22 men with him and his 2 sons. American troops surrounded the arsenal and then they killed his 2 sons and most of his men. Brown was seriously injured and then they captured him. He was then called to be hung. Before he got hung he gave a note to one of the guards. In short this is Harpers Ferry.

    The American Presidential election was held on November 6th 1860. Abraham Lincoln had the most states by a lot. He was mild about slavery and just did not want it to spread. He won without one southern vote. Breckinridge had the second most votes with 72. He also wanted to aggressively expand slavery. Then there was Bell with 39 votes. He was moderate about slavery.
