    Underground Railroad

    The underground Railroad was a system of routes to help runaway slaves escape to Canada. Abolitionist kept slaves in their houses, payed for transportation, and got them jobs once they were in Canada. Most fugitive runaways knew just getting north was not safe. There were bounty hunters trying to catch runaways any chance they get.

    On March 3, 1820 congress passed the Missouri Compromise. The issue was that Missouri wanted to be a slave state.the north and south debated about whether or not Missouri should’ve been a slave state so Henry clay came up with the compromise.

    The 36’30’ was created by the compromise as well, the 36’30’ was an invisible line that separated free from slave states (north and south) the 36’30’ was only in the Louisiana Territory . The north wanted to keep balance in the states no more slave states than free states and the other way around.

    It was a compromise that would allow the south to have one slave state (Missouri) and the north one free state (Maine) the north tried to change the rules about slavery saying that no new slaves could be brought into Missouri and once slaves turned 25 they were to be set free. The south wouldn't allow this so they didn't follow these new “rules”.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    a man named Nat Turner led a rebellion of about 60 or 70 slaves to rebel against white plantation owners and their families in South Ampton, Virginia. the first plantation to go down was the Travis Plantation which was Turner's owner. The rebellion went on for 48 hours on August 22 through the 23, of 1831. This rebellion happened because slaves were tired of being property and being beaten, not getting, paid, and having no rights.

    the Compromise of 1850 was when the Fugitive slave act was in effect, washington ended the slave trade in the capitol. Also California was announced a free state. Henry Clay came up with the compromise on January 29,1850.

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that got rid of the 36’30’ line and allowed for Kansas and Nebraska to vote for freedom or a slave state. Stephen Douglas wanted to run for president so he thought getting rid of the line would get him southern support, but instead it got the northerners angry and they thought he supported the slave power. The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed for popular sovereignty.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas happened after John Brown attacked 5 proslavery supporters and killed them in front of their families. This started a mini civil war between Proslavery and antislavery supporters. Anti-slavery supporters moved into Kansas from New England to keep Kansas a free state, they were called free-soilers. pro-slavery supporters went to Kansas from the south and voted illegally to make it a slave state.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    this case went on from 1846- March 6,1857. Dred Scott was a black man who thought he was free. because he lived in a northern state for 11 years he thought he had the right to be out of slavery forever. so he took his owner to court to sue for his freedom. it took 11 years but the case finally got to the supreme court to decide on Dred Scott’s freedom. the verdict was a no and Scott would not go on with a free life, until the former master's son bought Dred and his wife and set them free.

  • The Raid on Harpers Ferry

    The Raid on Harpers Ferry
    October 16, 1859- October 18, 1859 a man named John Brown organized a raid with 5 blacks and 13 whites to help him infiltrate a Virginian arsenal called Harpers Ferry. the men made it into the arsenal but after they were in, the Virginian military came in and trapped them in the base with no way out, after half of the raiders were dead, including Brown’s two sons, the rest surrendered.
  • The Presidential Election of 1860

    The Presidential Election of 1860
    November 6, 1860 was the 19th quadrennial election. Lincoln won the election without a single southern vote and beat his opponent Douglas. Lincoln's party(republican) promised to prohibit slavery.
