    Isaac T. Hopper, a Quaker, began a system for hiding and aiding runaway slaves in 1787. This is what started the Underground Railroad. March 20th is the first day of spring, and spring was the safest time to of the year to escape, therefore March 20, 1787 will be the start date. The end date, December 6, 1865 was when the 13th Amendment ending slavery was passed, thus ending the need to escape on the Underground Railroad.

    The Underground Railroad were secret routes that slaves would take to get to freedom. These routes led from the upper south through the north then to Canada. Some of the routes slaves took were swamps, applacation mountains, along the Mississippi River, and by boat.The escape network was not literally underground or a railroad.

Fredrick Douglas met John Brown for the first time in Springfield, Massachusetts.The following year, for punishment for another attack, he went ta a proslavery town and brutally killed five of its settlers.

    Nat Turners Rebellion was a slave Rebellion that took place in virginia. led by Nat Turner .He was a slave that went to court against his owners. There 57 whites and about 100 blacks that were killed. The state executed 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion. Across the South, state legislatures passed new laws prohibiting education of slaves and free blacks. The rebellion was put down within a few days.

    The Compromise of 1850 was a package of five bills passed in the United States in September 1850. The south wanted to expand slavery into a piece of land west to Texas. Henry Clay which was the Great Compromiser proposed the Compromise. The Compromise of 1850 was designed to balance the interests of the two sections, north and soutt. They established that all slaves must be returned to there owners. Henry Clay was one of the compromisers.

    When the Kansas-Nebraska act was passed people from all over the country went into Kansas and Nebraska to vote whether they would be free or slave states. The north and south were both at war because of this. The first act of violence was in Lawrence Kansas and it started by pro slavery supporters.

    The election of 1860 was when 4 canadates 2 for the south and 2 for the north competed to be president. The 2 canadates for the south were John Bell and John Breckenridge. The 2 canadates for the north were Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Abraham Lincoln won the election.

    The Attack on Fort Sumter began when Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 because no one in the south voted for him so therefore they were mad. They thought if they could join the country they could leave them just as easy to so that’s just what they did. One day Abraham Lincoln sent cargo ships down to fort sumter not realizing they were enemy forts surrounding it.
