The United States of America declared their independence from Great Britain. Although this was declared they had to proove the independence by prevailing in the war. This gave them more reason to fight in the war. -

Compromise of 1850
California comes in as a free state and it strengthened the fugitive slave act. this caused many northeners to become abolishinist which was the opposite idea from the government. -
Kansas/Nebraska Act
This was the first idea of popular sovreignty. The fight was over money and it caused the first bloodshed over slavery. -
