    1st American and African American killed in the Revolutionary War.
  • U.S. Constitution Adopted

    U.S. Constitution Adopted

    Slaves are counted as three-fifths of a person.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case

    Scott made a case that he was legally free after being removed to free soil. The case went to Supreme Court and he was considered not to be a citizen because he was a slave, so he was not able to sue.
  • Last Slave Ship arrives in America

    Last Slave Ship arrives in America

    The Clotilde was the last slave ship to arrive in America. It was brought in secrecy due to this being a violation to the international slave trade ban.
  • U.S Constitution 13th Amendment

    U.S Constitution 13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act

    It granted citizenship and all the same rights that white people possessed in the United States to all males in the US without caring about race, color, and previous condition of slavery.

    The amendment extended rights granted by the Bill of Rights to former slaves.

    It granted the African American men the right to vote.

    First Jim Crown Law passed

    Tennessee passed the first "Jim Crow" segregation law which segregated state railroads. Other southern states passed similar laws eventually.

    This ruling by the Supreme Court lead to the term "separate but equal" to exist between white and colored races.
  • NAACP Established

    NAACP Established

    National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was established to ensure equality of rights for all persons and stop racial discrimination.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education

    Supreme Court ruled that separating children in public schools based on race is unconstitutional. This ended racial segregation for school in the US. It stopped "separate but equal".

    Prohibited discrimination in public places and made employment discrimination illegal.

    A 46 year old man was wrongfully attacked by the police which lead to his death. Huge protests sparked and eventually those men were charged.
