In Erikson's third stage, initiative vs guilt, the crisis is between gaining self confidence and a sense of purpose or having self-doubt and lack of initiative. Parental support and encouragement plays an important role in this stage.

    Selene earns an athletic scholarship for soccer to her state university. She decides to pursue a degree in sports science while playing for her college's team. In erikson's identity vs role confusion, the crisis is between developing a strong sense of self, independence and control, being able to live by society's standards and expectations or becoming insecure about one's self and confuse about the future.

    After a successful career as a soccer player, and with her own kids being of school age, Selene decides to share her knowledge and skills as a volunteer coach for her community's youth sports association. In Erikson's seventh stage generativity vs stagnation , the crisis is between feeling accomplished and contributing to society or feeling unproductive and uninvolved in the world.
