    At the constitutional Convention it was agreed that every 3 out of 5 slaves would count towards representation in Congress. Helps lead to the Civil War because as states were added debate over free states v. slave states increased.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was the first battle of free v. slave state in the United States. Missouri was entered as a slave states and Maine as a free state. The compromise also stated that no territory above the 36'30' line would be able to become a slave state. This compromise sloved the current issue but not slavery in general.

    The United States fought Mexico to free Texas and gain more territories. Gaining these territories would cause fighting betweem North and South about whether these territories would be free or slave.

    The compromise allowed for Califonia to enter the Union as a free state and the territories of Utah and New Mexico would be decide by popular sovereignty.Conflict grew becuase allowing the people living in the territories to choose would make people from both north and south move to fight for slavery or freedom.

    The Fugitive Slave Act allowed for the hunt, capture and return of runaway slaves. The act continued to build up conflict between the northern and southern states. The North felt as an attack to those who were already free and the south saw it as a way to get their property back.

    This book showed the truth about slavery and open many people's eyes. This cause anger to the South because it showed how they lived and many now wanted to abolish slavery.

    After debating the fate of the territores of Kansas and Nebraska would be up to poplular sovereignty. This grew tensions becuase these territories were originally free and now the decision was up to the people populating the territories.

    Dredd Scott a slave fighting for freedom was denied his liberty eventhough his owner had moved to a state where slavery was banned. The Supreme Court decision angered many of the northern free statess. This caused conflict between the North and South.

    The eletion of 1860 was a boiling point that lead to the Civil War. The south viewed the elected president Abraham Lincoln as a man who wanted to abolish slavery.

    The Southern states wanted slavery and thought that thier rights were in danger. The secession lead directly to the Civil War it showed that the Union had broken apart.
