  • Proclamation Line

    Proclamation Line
    Issued by King George III following Great Britain's acquisition of French territory in North America after the end of the French and Indian War/Seven Years' War, which forbade all settlement past a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    This act was the first direct tax on the colonies. Almost all printed materials were taxed. This included newspapers, posters, deeds, and even playing cards.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Required colonists to provide food and shelter to British soldiers. Resentment grew. This formed the basis for the future 3rd amendment.
  • Declaratory Acts

    Declaratory Acts
    This act declared England's authority to make laws for the colonies. Stated that parliament had the right to tax colonists at anytime.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    Passed in 1767. This act placed taxes on imported materials. These included glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Incident where 5 colonists were killed by British soldiers. Colonists were furious. Tensions calmed when Britain repealed most of the Townshend Acts.
  • Committee Of Correspondence

    Committee Of Correspondence
    Network of individuals that kept people informed throughout the colonies. Created after Boston Massacre. Called for colonies to send delegates to a colonial congress to discuss what to do next.
  • Tea Act

    Lowered the tax on British tea. Made it cheaper than the non-British tea colonists smuggled.

    Incident where the sons of liberty dumped large amounts of tea into the Boston Harbor. Disguised as Indians. 342 Chests of tea were dumped.

    The Intolerable Acts were passed in 1774 to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. There were three major acts involved that angered the colonists.
