  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    What Happened: -Written in Paris
    -Ends French and Indian War (7 years war)
    -First world wide war
    -New France east of Mississippi River goes to Britain
    -New France west of Mississippi River goes to Spain Impacts/Effects: End of war kicks French out, Britain blames colonist for the war, repay war debt, restricted colonists access to Ohio River Valley(Proclamation Line), ends salutary neglect.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    What Happened: -Lowers taxes from Mollasses Act
    -Goal:Decrease smuggling
    -Issued Writs of Assistance allowing search of property without a warrant Impact/Effects: Colonists boycott buying surgar, Store owners refuse to sell sugar (non-importation), colonists furious about search without warrants, smuggling continues.
  • Stamp Act

    What Happened: -Tax on all printed goods
    -Range from 1 cent for newspaper to $10 for a diploma Imapct/Effects: Additional tax made colonists feel like their rights were being taken away, there was a colonial resistence, stamp act congress formed which is the first organized rebellion that is succesful, Sons and Daughters of Liberty formed, Boycotts, Non-Importation agreement, some used violent and illegal methods

    What Happened: -no one is sure who started it
    -british fire at colonists
    -colonists attack british
    -both sides see eachother as a threat Impact/Effects: This is used as a form of propaganda by the colonist too show that the British soldiers use unnecessary force on colonists, British use it to convince people in britain that the colonists are rebelling and its getting out of hand, first major form of propaganda, british troops are sent back home snd colonists are left alone

    What Happened: -Started by John Hanncock and Sam Adams
    -Dump Tea in Harbour dressed as Indians
    -$1 million worth of tea Impact/Effects: English see it as a threat, no one got in trouble because no one admitted to it, King George uses force by sending in troops, putting Boston under Military control called Martial Law, makes Boston economically reliant on Britain
  • Intolerable Acts

    What Happened: -shuts down Boston port to trading
    -nullifies/suspends Massachusettes Government, laws, and court
    -troops sent to england for trial
    -soldiers can do what they want
    -reinforcfement of quartering act Impacts/Effects: This isolates boston ffrom the rest of the colonies, King believes its a fair punishment to get money back form the French and Indian War, Stops unification of all colonies, call for inter colonial meeting

    -whats our rights how to defend them (colonists)
    -try boycotts and non-importation Impacts/Effects: Formed Committees of Correspondence, inspect custom houses, publish names of those who dont participate in boycott, avoid mobs

    -militias form all over Mass.
    -First "battle" of the revolution
    -King tries to take away all guns and seize leaders
    -Brief scrimmage Imact/Effects: King's plan no longer secretive, failed plan because there are no guns to be found, colonial ambush, first stanfing opposition against the British
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    What Happened: -response to lexington and concord
    -Reconciliation vs. Independence
    -George Washington nominated to lead army
    -continental army form but unorganized Impact/Effects: Moderats write Olive Branch Petition, King thinks its a joke, declares colonies as a state of rebellion, Thomas Paine writes "Common Semse," John Adams in charge

    The Declaration of Independence was written to declare independence from Britain. This is important because it expresses the mindset of 2/3 of the Americans. It is what essentially declared war against Britain.
